How to Install and Configure qTox on Windows, macOS, and Linux

qTox is a cross-platform, open-source Tox protocol client for encrypted peer-to-peer chat, voice, video, and file transfer. This article gives step‑by‑step installation and initial configuration instructions for Windows, macOS, and popular Linux distributions, plus basic troubleshooting and security tips.

Before you start

  • Download releases only from official sources or well-known mirrors (qTox GitHub, Flathub/AppImage, SourceForge mirrors).
  • Assume you want the latest stable release for your platform unless you prefer nightly builds.
  • You’ll create a local Tox profile (a device identity). Back it up if you migrate devices.

Windows

Install

  1. Download the latest Windows installer (.exe) from the official qTox release page or trusted mirror.
  2. Run the installer and follow prompts. Allow the app through Windows Defender/other firewall if prompted.
  3. If using a portable build, unzip and run qtox.exe.

First launch & configuration

  1. On first run create a profile:
    • Choose a username.
    • Set a strong password (used to encrypt your profile file).
    • Optionally set an avatar and status message.
  2. Copy your Tox ID (long hex string) from the profile pane — share it with contacts to add them.
  3. Enable/confirm audio and video devices in Settings → Audio/Video.
  4. Configure network:
    • If behind NAT, enable UDP/TCP relay options if available, or set a port forward on your router for the UDP port qTox uses.
    • If auto-update is offered, enable if you want automatic updates.

Windows tips

  • If calls fail, allow qTox through your firewall and confirm microphone/camera permission.
  • Back up the profile file (typically in %APPDATA%\qTox) and store the password securely.

macOS

Install

  1. Download the macOS .dmg or .app archive from the official releases or
